The Prison Administration was founded in 1995 as a body within the Ministry of Justice. The prisons and the juvenile correctional home (institution) are the Administration's internal organisational units.

Curriculum vitae
Tomaž Smole, born 14 June 1968 in Ljubljana, graduated from the Faculty of Organisational Sciences in Kranj in 1993. He was employed with the Kočevski tisk company as an advisor to the director. In 1994, he took up the management of the quality assurance service at the same company. In this period, he also cooperated with the Miklošič Education Centre and the Technical Training Centre. In 1996, he was employed with Iskra Sistemi, d.d., as an organiser of business information system and in 1997 with AMBA Co. company as a deputy director. Between 1998 and 2002 he was the president of the supervisory committee of the Kočevski tisk, d.d. company. Tomaž Smole was last employed with ELMO d.d. as an advisor to the director responsible for the project of business process modernisation and at the same time served as a director of a daughter company of Media Park.
THE ADMINISTRATION'S BASIC TASKS
The Prison Administration of the Republic of Slovenia performs administrative and professional assignments concerning:
- the enforcement of prison sanctions
- the organisation and management of prisons and the correctional facility
- ensuring provision of financial, material, personnel and other conditions for the functioning of the prisons and the correctional facility
- personnel training for the needs of enforcement of penal sanctions
- the enforcement of rights and obligations of the persons who have been deprived of liberty.
OGRANISATION OF THE ADMINISTRATION
The affairs and competences of the Slovenian Prison Administration are carried out by the following organisational units:
- Dob Prison and its open and semi-open unit in Slovenska Vas
- Celje Prison and Juvenile Prison
- Koper Prison and its Nova Gorica department
- Ljubljana Prison with departments in Novo Mesto, Radovljica and Ig open unit
- Maribor Prison and its Murska Sobota department and Rogoza open departments
- Radeče Correctional Home(institution for juveniles)
The prisons are all generally organised along the same lines. The basic two sectors are the same. The sector for treatment consists of the Education Department, Department for Security and Department for work of prisoners. The organisational chart of the particular prison is dependent of the largeness and speciality of the inmates.
